With my Ecologist ‘hat’ on, I recently chaired a session at the inaugural Timber Festival. Tony Greenham, Economics Director at the RSA, John Everitt, Chief Exec of The National Forest, and I chatted about community banks; the Saddleworth moor fires; Doughnut Economics; forests; news and more. Trees, festivals, ideas…. bliss!

I recently spoke at a Libraries Unlimited and Arts Council England event in London, which looked at the social and financial value of libraries. I was invited to speak and be part of a panel discussion after someone came across this blog I wrote about how libraries and social entrepreneurs might mutually support each other. Books, community and ideas = my kind of event!

Talks to join dots

In the next three weeks, I’m going to these three talks at the RSA in London:

1. Creating Freedom — filmmaker Raoul Martinez will tackle “economics, philosophy, politics, criminology, psychology and environmentalism, and shows that the more we understand how the world shapes us, the more effectively we can shape our world.”

2. Together Is Better — “global bestselling author and leadership guru Simon Sinek offers inspiration and advice for finding purpose and fulfilment in life and work through our connection with others.”

3. The Power of Disorder to Transform our Lives — “renowned economist Tim Harford explains that embracing chaos and mess is the only way to be truly creative, innovative and resilient.”

So what?

Being Wise

Highlights from a conversation with Krista Tippett

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be in an audience at the RSA in London, watching Krista Tippett in conversation with Elizabeth Oldfield (who is Director of the think tank Theos).

Krista Tippett is a bit of a role model of mine. She’s a Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and New York Times best-selling author. In 2014, she received the National Humanities Medal from Barack Obama for “thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence.”

Event: The impact of faith based agencies on global health

I’ll be talking about the charity I co-lead, Community Health Global Network, and looking at how we engage with faith leaders and faith communities to collectively improve community health and wellbeing.

“In September 2015, the United Nations agreed seventeen sustainable development goals (SDGs), aimed at creating a world free from extreme poverty, inequality and injustice and aiming for a sustainable relationship with the environment.  The third of these goals focuses on achieving health and wellbeing for all people.

In July of 2015, the Lancet launched a ground breaking series of articles that sought to look in depth at the impact of faith based organisations, faith communities and faith leaders on global health.  Their overall conclusion was that the churches needed to be more health literate, while health bodies, development agencies and governments needed to be more faith literate.

The SDG summit was opened by Pope Francis, and a number of satellite meetings showed that in wider development there is an increasing willingness to engage with faith groups in at least some parts of the global development community and the UN.  With this new global agenda on development in general, and health in particular, what part can Christian mission agencies, churches and healthcare organisations play? How can we work effectively with secular bodies, and what areas of difficulty and controversy still exist for such joint working?”

“With 140 delegates, speakers, sponsors and volunteers the MOEVEMENT conference aims to deliver fun, learning and inspiration. There will be countless ways to connect and engage with community members, speakers and delegates.”

If you’re looking for new ideas, a new community, and bags of inspiration, this event is for you!
